Prime Minister Tareque Rahman is visiting Sylhet today for the first time since taking office. An atmosphere of festivity prevails across the entire district surrounding his visit. Various events have been organized, combining sports, development, and heritage.

On Saturday (May 02), the Prime Minister will inaugurate ‘Notun Kuri Sports’, a special sports initiative for the country’s young generation, at the District Stadium. Under this program, youngsters will have the opportunity to participate in a total of eight disciplines, including football, cricket, and kabaddi.

Sylhet’s Sports Officer, Md. Noor Hossain, informed that the Prime Minister will exchange views with athletes from various disciplines. On this occasion, immense enthusiasm prevails among sports organizers, players, coaches, and officials.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate several development projects. These include the Sylhet City Corporation’s waterlogging alleviation project and the excavation work of the Basia Canal in the Kandigaon area.

Furthermore, upon arriving in Sylhet, the Prime Minister will visit the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (R.A.) and participate in prayers there. Samun Mahmud Khan, the Khadem (custodian) of the shrine, stated, “The Prime Minister’s visit is a matter of joy for us. Previously, his father, President Ziaur Rahman, also visited this place.”

Widespread enthusiasm has been observed among party leaders and activists surrounding the Prime Minister’s visit. Simultaneously, security measures have been heightened by the administration.

Sylhet’s Superintendent of Police, Dr. Chowdhury Md. Zaber Sadeque, stated that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the Prime Minister’s security while also minimizing public inconvenience.

It is hoped that this visit will bring a new message of sports development and infrastructural progress from Sylhet.
