Eight defendants in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Control Act, stemming from the BDR mutiny at Pilkhana, have been released from prison on bail.
On Friday (May 1), one inmate from the High Security Unit of Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur and seven others from Part-2 of the same prison were released.
Abdullah Al Mamun, Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur High Security Prison, confirmed the matter, stating that one person was released from his facility, and the remaining individuals were released from other units.
According to prison authorities, the bail bonds for the eight defendants accused in the explosives case were sent to the prison. After verification, and finding no other pending arrest warrants against them, they were released on bail. Their relatives were present at the prison gate at the time of their release.
Halima Khatun, Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail Part-2, stated that after verifying the bail documents, one inmate was released on Friday morning and six more in the afternoon.
It is noteworthy that on February 25 and 26, 2009, a mutiny at the headquarters of the border guard force in Pilkhana, Dhaka, resulted in the deaths of 74 people, including 57 army officers. Two separate cases were filed in connection with this incident: one for murder and another under the Explosive Substances Act.
In the verdict of the murder case, after the trial of 850 individuals on November 5, 2013, 152 people were sentenced to death, 160 to life imprisonment, and 256 to various terms of imprisonment. Additionally, 278 individuals were acquitted.
